9日，物理学家组织网报道称，美国国家航空航天局（NASA）戈达德太空飞行中心的科学家团队，对这波“卫星雨”进行了深入调查，发现“星链”正面临一个意想不到的威胁：太阳活动。
太阳活动强烈让卫星“提前退休”
太阳是一颗“善变”的恒星，每11年会经历一次周期性的活动增强阶段。这个周期中，太阳表面的磁场活动剧烈，太阳风暴和耀斑的频率和强度会随之波动。这类太阳风暴可谓“迷人的危险”，它虽然能够带来美丽的极光，但同时也会影响地球的电离层和高层大气结构。
“太阳活动增强会剧烈加热地球电离层，尤其是基层区域，”国际宇航联空间运输委员会主席杨宇光10日在接受科技日报记者采访时解释说，“这会导致地球大气的顶层电离层大气膨胀、密度上升，使本来极为稀薄的高层大气阻力成倍增加。”
他进一步指出，这种大气阻力虽小，却因卫星运行速度高达每秒7.8公里，依然能对其产生显著影响。“大气阻力与密度乘以速度的平方成正比，所以速度一高，哪怕密度再稀薄，也会造成不小的减速效应。”
来自NASA的三位科学家分析了2020至2024年间坠落地球的523颗“星链”卫星在不同太阳活动水平下的轨道变化。2024年正处于太阳活动的第25个周期，也是一个极大值期。研究指出，本周期太阳“表现出比上一周期更为剧烈的活动”。
研究团队指出，每颗“星链”卫星原本设计的轨道寿命约为5年。但在2024年这一轮太阳活动增强的阶段，部分卫星从280公里参考高度下降至重返大气层的“下落”过程，比平时快了10至12天。研究表明，当太阳活动增强，引发地磁风暴时，高层大气发生加热与膨胀，空气密度上升，导致卫星受到更大气阻。这会让卫星加速减速，轨道衰减加剧，最终更快地坠入大气层烧毁。
